Project name:
CUPO | Service Duration: August 2018 to April 2019 at Division of Industrial Design (DID) Overview: To foster environmental empathy by designing the new to-go coffee cup sharing service system, encouraging coffee cup reuse Role: Research, Design Probes, User Test, 3D Conceptualisation, Rapid Prototypes, Design for Production |
Background
Inspired by the high plastic consumption in Singapore, I challenge myself in thinking of ways to reduce plastic consumption by influencing and shaping our plastic consumption. Many single-use plastics have short shelf-life and high plastic consumption is a pressing issue worldwide. It takes 10 minutes for a coffee cup to turn into a trash.

630 million cups are thrown in a year in Singapore
Overview
This project mainly focus on shaping our future plastic consumption through the understanding of our current plastic consumption behaviours on disposable coffee cups. Through months of several interactions with coffee drinkers and cafe owners, design probes were designed to foster environmental empathy in coffee drinkers.
Research Process & Findings
To better understand our various stakeholders - coffee drinkers and cafe owners, I spent the first few months in conducting closed interviews with coffee drinkers and cafe owners to understand their perception on single-use coffee cups. In addition, I shadowed coffee drinkers to study their behavioural patterns on the usage of coffee cups.

These interviews gave me valuable findings to the various reasons of high plastic consumption.
Key Findings:
Insights and Design Opportunities
Key Findings:
- Convenience of coffee cups - many coffee drinkers raised the most attractive attribute was the convenience of having to throw coffee cup to nearest bin once they are done drinking and the to-go culture is strong in Singapore.
- Low environmental awareness - current environmental messages are seen passive and overly neglected or even ignored. Many are not turning away from coffee cup because they do not see the implications of their actions.
Insights and Design Opportunities
- Current consumption is fuelled by our lack of mindfulness and the ingrained 'to-go' culture in coffee drinkers.
- Future ideal consumption: more mindful consumption by making 'to-go' coffee convenient
To shape future plastic consumption by studying the behaviour of our current plastic consumption
Idea: CUPO
CUPO seeks to provide a network system for drinkers to consume to-go coffee in the CupoCup in a more sustainable manner. The CupoApp fosters environmental empathy by showing the environmental benefits to drinkers. Simple search, enjoy, visualise and share the environmental benefits that Cupo brings.

CUPO Service System to provide Convenience
CUPO service system aims to provide convenience for user to enjoy and return of CupoCup at any existing CupoCafes. With convenience, user can now indulge in to-go coffee with zero plastic waste.

2. Scan CupoCup to scanner with the SnapTag, similar to QR code and the CupoCup will be connected to account.
5. Return CupoCup with a tap and one will receive their deposit back into their account.
|
3. Pay through CupoPay makes payment seamless and deposit will be automatically be on hold.
6. Visualise environmental benefits in fostering environmental empathy, further motivate one to keep using CUPO service.

Easy Implementation of CUPO
Working with existing small cafes in providing geographical convenience to coffee drinkers and empowering small cafes to quickly achieve critical mass of CUPO users on the national and global scale.

Users Validation
Sinapore's responses
Interviewed coffee drinkers and cafe owners in Singapore to hear their final evaluation of Cupo as a service system. These are ones of the many responses:
"I would also like to play a vital role in saving the environment. I always feel guilty of having to dispose cups whenever I am done drinking."
- Consumer M, 25
"This is a good stepping stone in saving the environment as is hard to make drinkers stop using disposable cups, Cupo will be able to address it."
- Jen Fi, Founder of Reedz Cafe

Conclusion
This personal project provide me a huge enlightenment in tackling the topic sustainability in the future - no longer product focused but human interactions focused. By rethinking of how to change the interactions humans have with the product, a good sustainable product is one that promotes or inculcates green behaviour in humans.
