Project name:
The Future of Newstands in Paris | System Duration: 6 Days workshop in May 2018 at Design Act!, Paris and 2 weeks presentation preparation Overview: Design for Future of Newsstands in Paris to increase literacy rate of newspaper among the Parisians; in collaboration with Ile de France Team: With Jordan Aman, Jihane Jiellal, Ruben Bendavid, Paul Vienney Role: Ethnographic Research, Design Probes, Conceptualization |
Background
The sales of newsstands in Ill de France has been dwindling and many store owners face financial problems to make ends meet with poor working conditions. In addition to the decreasing literacy rate of newspaper among the locals, many customers do feel that most of the merchandises sold were not accessible to them thus accounts for the low sale.
Overview
This project in collaboration with Ile de France was to design the 21st century newstands located around Paris to increase the literacy rate of newspaper among the locals. By understanding the ecosystem around Parisian newsstands, how can the future of newsstands extend beyond it's primary purpose?
Can the future of newsstands be part of the city cultural landscape or mobility system?
How can they survive the crisis of press and win out the new modalities of content consumptions - internet, smartphone and social networks?
Can we create a newsstand to provide better working environment for vendors?
Research Process and Findings
To better understand our various stakeholders - local consumers and vendors at a deeper level, our team spent the first few days in conducting situational analysis of various newsstands in Paris. We shadowed consumers and conducted interviews with consumers and vendors.

After conducting the secondary research, we pen down our various observations and findings gained from both - the shadowing and interviews and consolidated into an affinity diagram.
Insights and Analysis
Our team got down and dirty as we drew much links between the various different findings we listed out on the wall. Things started to get more interesting when each team members came forward to share not only their design perspective but also their other expertise that shape our final idea: MOMO.

Conclusion
Given the tight deadline, our group managed to finish this awesome MOMO project and presented to Valerie Pecresse (President of the Ile de France region) and Agnes Evren (Vice President of the Regional Council of Ile de France in charge of education and culture). The responses were positive and Valerie Pecresse mentioned she did expect how far sighted we were in displaying our concept on the future of newsstands in Paris.
Our team do hope the key features of MOMO will kickstart the project on the future of newsstands in Paris! Let's MOMO!
