Project name:
S T U X | Exploratory Duration: August to October 2016 at Division of Industrial Design (DID) Overview: Exploratory research on biomimicry design Role: Research, Rapid Ideation, 3D Conceptualisation, Design Developments, 3D Print Refinements |
Overview
The project is purely exploratory research on biomimicry design which is not about designing an end product, but focusing more on the research and design process.
Research Process
The research started through an extensive explorations on forms found in nature and the understanding of the relation between the specialized form to it's properties, how can the knowledge gained be translated into designing STUX.

Design Process
The design process started off with curves derived from the 2D sketches & slowly progress to form curves that span across x, y, z-axis. Many explorations were made in the direction of structure with straight struts.

Design Refinements
With the chosen structure - similar to the spicule where 6 struts meet one node, further refinements are made in progression resulting in many iterations.

Structure Performance
The final structure (3X3) was established and subsequently the structure undergoes several tests - stress, tension, torque to understand its properties.

Application
Through several tests, the safety factor index values shown STUX is more likely to wistand compression & pulling force, thus can be used for designing suspension bridge.
